As befits the former residence of the first commander of the tower of Belém, CS Palace Lisboa Hotel is located a short distance from the bank of the river Tagus and the tower itself, in the famous Belém district. Once the embarkation point for Golden Age discovery voyages, this beautiful district contains many of the impressive monuments that were erected as a tribute to Portugal’s seafaring exploits, namely the Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery and the more modern Discoveries monument.

Long avenues with spacious gardens skirt this scenic riverside area that is suffused with history and culture. The modern exhibition centre, the Centro Cultural de Belém, lies alongside such important cultural landmarks as the Vasco da Gama Aquarium, the Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium and the Maritime, Coach and Archaeology Museums.

Plenty of entertainment and a superb choice of restaurants are also very close at hand. A string of trendy bars, restaurants and nightclubs border the river’s bank whilst many traditional Portuguese restaurants can be found in the streets of Belém or overlooking the beautiful gardens. This is also the birthplace of that singular Portuguese discovery, the mouth-watering ‘pastel de nata’ (custard tart), available at the delightful centenary pastry shop that zealously guards the secret original recipe.

The area is well-served by public transport (train, trams and taxis), facilitating access to the historical centre of Lisbon, while the riverside road continues along the coast, providing an easy route to the coastal towns of Estoril and Cascais.
